This website documents a research initiative by Will Galloway, Carlo Parente and Terri Peters at the Department of Architectural Science at Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada from 2021-2022. Recognizing that the COVID-19 pandemic has been, and will continue to be a profound historical marker, we want to measure and reflect on this moment for architecture and architects by focusing on the challenges we face as a profession. Though our questions are not necessarily new, what they may mean for the next generation is now being decided. We hope to find new opportunities to not only record what is happening but also to nudge the direction positively.
We are inspired to question the history and future of ideas like diversity in our profession, the future of online-everything, health and wellbeing and even if architects can design air. We have created a series of explainer videos and social media posts to prompt comments and thoughts from our peers. These can be seen here and our forthcoming podcasts in collaboration with Archinect will extend that effort. We are grateful that this initiative received an award from the Ryerson University Dean’s Pedagogical Innovation (DPI) Fund.
